PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, also known as Regulation (EU) 2025/40
140+ years of PACKAGING
Our founder, William Kershaw West, was born in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, in 1859. As a young man, he trained as a cooper (craftsman) and packaging case maker.
In 1884, he acquired T&W Raine, which specialised in joinery and making packaging cases. Trading as W K West, he made casks (barrel shaped containers made from staves, headings, and hoops). Predating the invention of the corrugated case, casks were the cutting edge of the packaging industry of the time.
In 1889, William moved the business to Cornish Street, on the banks of the river Don in the heart of Sheffield. This location is still home to one of our sites today.
In 1920, W K West was incorporated into a limited company, following which both William’s sons joined the business. Leaving Mr K M West and Mr W M West to take over the running of the business, William Kershaw West retired in 1939. Mr J G West also joined the business in 1947.
from 1884 TO MODERN DAY
As the corrugated industry evolved, W K West Ltd grew and thrived, specialising in supplying bespoke heavy duty corrugated cases that replaced wooden packaging solutions.
In the 1980s, the business went digital and expanded into the Nottingham area, with the purchase of the Midland Box Company in 1985.
Today, we are still a family-owned business at the forefront of sustainable packaging solutions, but we are also a silver ecovadis and ISO accredited company.
OUR VISION
Having been at the forefront of the latest packaging technologies since 1884, we have embraced and helped pioneer the shift to sustainable packaging solutions for modern industries.
However, for us, sustainability is about more than materials. As a family-owned business with a 140+ year history in the packaging industry, we consider the need for sustainable solutions to be a personal one. It is not just a part of our offering, but part of who we are.
frequently asked questions
Need answers? Here are some of the questions we’re asked most often. However, if we don’t answer your query below, send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
WHAT IS CORRUGATED BOARD?
Corrugated board is made by laminating paper with starch, there are two components liners and fluting. Liners are laminated (glued) to either side of the fluting, this structure gives the case strength. Corrugated cases can be made as a single wall (one layer of fluting), double wall (two layers of fluting or triple wall (three layers of fluting).

The paper quality used in the board can be virgin material (kraft) or recycled material (test) and the paper weight is measured in grammes per m2 (gsm) ranging from 80-300. The fluting can also vary in thickness, ranging from A-F. These varying combinations allow us to ensure that our corrugated cases are made to suit our customers needs.

WHAT IS A FEFCO?
FEFCO stands for the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers. In the 1960s FEFCO created a code system to enable the standardisation of corrugated case designs. This enables a single coding system to replace complex descriptions which were being used for standard case styles. Today the FEFCO system is on its 12th version and used throughout the world.
Common FEFCO codes include:
0201

0200

0426

0310

WHAT IS A DIE CUT?
A die is a tool which has blades that are arranged in a specific pattern. The blades themselves will be set and shaped on the die so they can be used in one motion during the case manufacturing process to cut, slot and crease. A die cut is the product that is produced in this method which is utilised when the design required cannot be made by standard case making machinery.
Many of our customers use die cut packaging solutions because
- The case is made specifically to fit the product so reduces the need for voidfill and uses less paper
- Less movement while the product is being transported
- Fewer breakages
- Can be designed so that no Gluing or stitching required
- Supplied flat so reduced transport costs and CO2 emissions
- Reduced storage space required
- Easy to assemble
- They look great with your product

Westpack’s corrugated packaging is manufactured in-house at our sites in Sheffield and Nottingham. We also assemble composite packs at our site in Sheffield. Our raw material supply is from a sustainable forestry source, based in the UK.
HOW CAN WESTPACK HELP MY BUSINESS MEET ITS EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY OBLIGATIONS?

Our packaging solutions use sustainable and biodegradable materials, which are recyclable. They also promote reusability and reduce wastage. As such, using a packaging solution from Westpack can support your business in meeting its EPR obligations.
